Yesterday we lit one of the two Chrysalis candles that made the pilgrimage to the Mithras temple in London. It was overcast when we set up, but minutes later the scene was transformed with a brilliant burst of solar radiance! A fine welcome home and a major nod. ~~swipe for before and after~~ On a celebratory note: Happy Lammas weekend to all! Lammas, or loaf-mass, is a celebration of plenty and the start of the harvest - the time when the first loaves of bread made from the new harvest are being baked and enjoyed. In some Wiccan and modern Pagan traditions, Lammas is also a day of honoring Lugh, the Celtic craftsman god - which seems like a good match for those of us who make a living crafting things with our hands! 👐🏼🕯
In 1941, the bombing of London revealed the remains of a temple to the Roman god Mithras. It is one of only a handful of such temples that are known to exist within Europe. A dream opportunity opened up last minute and I had a chance to visit the Mithraeum today, it involved staying up for over 24 hours and lots of travel (and only one day in London 😭) but I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is a space filled with mystery and ancient energy and I was thrilled to make a pilgramage with a Chrysalis candle to this foundational spot. The lighting design on the tour is particularly spectacular! Yours from Londinium... Sorry folks - we've been as quiet as a grave in July! Here's a pic from Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn where we live-scored a film on the NJ Pine Barrens (by my friend @dskessler ) this past weekend. A Mithras Halcyon II hand-dripped beeswax pillar was lit during the performance (of course). This month has been all about making music, travelling, planning and hiding from the heat - but you can rest assured we'll be ramping up our light-bringing activity as the Fall approaches. Hello world! Interrupting the usual candle-wizardry to share more of my other incarnation at the Light Research Program in Philadelphia, where I work with new lighting technologies. Here's a beautiful LED lighting array I've worked with recently, and in photo two you can see a few of the wide assortment of meters we use to characterize new light sources. We measure everything from color temperature to intensity (brightness) and beyond, but by far my favorite is recording spectral power distributions (more on that in future posts). The lighting field is exploding right now because of the research that our lab (and others in the field of photobiology) have done on the biological and behavioral effects of light on humans and other life. Did you know that light is, effectively, a drug - that it regulates sleep and mood? Here it comes - the slow decompartmentalization of the Mithras account and my personal account so that you can learn more about this ambient wizard/scientist who makes the beeswax lights you enjoy in your living rooms, bedrooms, altars and studios. Here's a rare, sleepy-eyed, late-night apron selfie from the studio/candle-lair in Philadelphia. I work full-time days at the Light Research Program (more on that in the future) then come home and get the beeswax vibes flowing in the evening - so sometimes the nights get late. This Summer has been busier than expected and found me hustling a bit to keep up - but Mithras continues to grow and spread warmth and light so it's completely worth the effort!
